The School

Cyimbili High School

Cyimbili High School is a rapidly growing semi-private boarding school for 525 students on the shores of beautiful Lake Kivu. The many changes taking place to improve the learning and living environment at the school are an attraction to families in the surrounding areas.  Over the past year electricity in every classroom , clean water, and a new bathroom facility have been installed.  Donated educational materials and supplies and sports equipment have sparked student involvement in class and after school.

Expectations for academic excellence are high and the student schedule rigorous.  The school day begins with a 5:00 AM wake up.  Classes begin at 7:20 AM and end at 4:30 PM with a 1 1/2 hour break for lunch.  Academic classes are large (30 to 45 students) and all instruction is teacher driven with chalk and a blackboard.  From 4:30 PM  until 6:30 PM students are free and many choose to be involved in newly formed group activities: the English Club, Karate Club,  Choirs, the Environmental Club, the Never Again or the Avoiding Aids Groups, the Traditional Dance Club, the Modern Dance Club, or the Girls and Boys Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball teams.

There is a desperate need at Cyimbili High School for textbooks, dictionaries, resource materials, English language materials, technology... ie. computers, cd players, projectors, etc.   (The computer technology teacher does not even have a computer.)   Club and sport teams operate with little or no materials and/or equipment.  The physical structure of the high school classrooms and cafeteria facility need immediate repairs to crumbling sidewalks and stairs, broken windows, floors, doors, and ceilings.

Despite the physical needs at Cyimbili High School, students are motivated to study hard for the opportunity to go on to university.  They study in the evenings in empty classrooms willingly in order to excel on exams.  They have hope and the dreams of becoming accountants, teachers, pastors, and police officers one day.
